Bilbao is the largest city in the Basque Country (Euskadi) and it offers a great mix of traditional Basque culture and modern art and architecture. This vibrant city divided by the Nervión River has plenty to see and visit and whether you travel solo, as a couple, with friends or family, Bilbao is perfect to suit everyone’s taste. With its avant-garde architecture, unique culture, buzzing nightlife, fantastic food and charming old town, this cosmopolitan city has everything you want for an ideal weekend getaway.
Frank Gehry’s world-famous Guggenheim Museum is Bilbao’s most famous attraction but the city boasts many other great museums and contemporary architectural works, including the Fine Arts Museum, the Zubizuri bridge and the Azkuna Zentroa, a modernist wine warehouse turned into a cultural centre. The lively old town (Casco Viejo) is another must when visiting the capital of Vizcaya. The oldest part of the city has important historical buildings, such as the Santiago Cathedral, and its cobblestone streets are lined with typical pintxos bars and cool restaurants.
If history, culture and gastronomy weren’t enough, Bilbao is also surrounded by beautiful hills and has wonderful beaches very easily accessed by public transport, making it a perfect destination for those who like escaping the city and practise outdoor activities. If you have a day or two to spare, Bilbao is also a great base to hit popular San Sebastián, just an hour down the coast.
