Day Trip to Guimaraes

A perfect day trip from Porto to the charming birthplace of Portugal

ABOUT THE Day Trip to Guimaraes

The Day Trip to Guimaraes meets at the statue of Bishop António Ferreira Gomes, opposite the Clérigos Tower. Taking in major sites like the ancient Castle of Guimarães, the Nossa Senhora de Oliveira Church, the Alameda Gardens and more, your local expert guide will show you one of Portugal’s must-see cities, all on an easy 6-hour day trip from Porto.

Portugal’s first capital city

This stunning city of only 50,000 inhabitants boasts an impressive 10th Century castle, where Portugal’s first king was born, helping Guimaraes lay claim to the title of Birthplace of Portugal. Your expert local guide will take you through the heart of the city, taking you to major landmarks like the gothic Santa Clara Convent, the impressive medieval Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, and the exquisite Carmo Garden and Church.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Due to Guimaraes being exceptionally well-preserved, as well as being a truly authentic example of a medieval settlement in Europe, Guimaraes was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2001. While much of the city is still original, the parts that have been reconstructed have been done so in a way that is faithful to authenticity.

An easy day trip from Porto
