Things to do in Berlin

ABOUT BERLIN

Berlin is the perfect mix of grit and glamour. Bismarck and Marx, Einstein and Hitler, JFK and Bowie, they’ve all shaped – and been shaped by – Berlin.

This is a city that was headquartered by Nazis, bombed to bits, divided in two and finally reunited – and that was just in the 20th century! You can still walk along the remnants of the Berlin Wall, marvel at the splendor of a Prussian palace, visit Checkpoint Charlie or stand in the very room where the Holocaust was planned.

The city has a vibrant culture which places a great emphasis on personal freedom and creativity, plus, its parties are legendary.

Ready to dive into this huge melting pot? Start with our Free Tour of Berlin, which gives you an overview of the city’s history and main attractions.

Public transportation

Transport tickets can be used on the bus, train (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, Regionalbahn), and tram. Single tickets from €2.80 (AB) or day passes from €7.00. If you’re traveling in a group of three to five people, try a small group ticket. At €19.90 for the day they’re great value! You must validate your ticket - look for the little machine on the train platform or in the tram/bus.

Airport transfer

Schönefeld Airport is served by the S-Bahn and the Regionalbahn, with the latter taking you direct to the central city. A standard ABC train ticket will suffice, €3.40. The best way from Tegel Airport is the TXL Bus; an AB single pass costs €2.80.

Safety

Berlin is generally a safe city but petty crime is still present. The key is to be streetsmart. Keep your valuables in a safe place and watch out for pickpockets that masqueraded as deaf or mute by asking you to sign a donation-sheet.

Tipping

Tipping in Berlin is not obligatory but very much welcomed. It is common to leave a tip if you enjoyed your meal and service. 10% of the bill is a common amount for a gratuity.

Currency

No Euros in your wallet? No problem. Both Tegel Airport (TXL) and Schoenefeld Airport (SFX) have currency exchange shops, as well as ATMs.
