Directly east of the ancient heart of Madrid lies the fantastic ‘literary neighbourhood’ the Barrio de las Letras where some of the greatest writers, poets and playwrights in history made their home. The memorable quotes lining the streets make it one of the cultural highlights of the city by day and the busy bars and cafés a party hotspot by night.

During this two and a half hour tour, you will discover how these two sides of the district collide in the figure of legendary American author Ernest Hemingway – discover one of his favorite bars and his passion for bullfighting. Visit the Cervantes’ House, where the world’s greatest novel, Don Quixote, was written.

Away from the narrow, twisted medieval streets of the center, you’ll find the other side of the city. The Madrid of the Bourbon dynasty: the grandest streets and stunning ensembles of early 20th century architecture from Art Deco to Neo-Mudéjar. Calle de Alcalá and the Paseo del Prado, where you’ll find the famous institutions that make Madrid one of the most majestic cities in the world. Madrid’s most iconic buildings form an incredible skyline of bold designs, vibrant colors and monumental grandeur. The phenomenal Golden Triangle of Art combines three of the world’s best collections of Old Masters, Early Modern and Contemporary Art.

This tour covers:
  • Santa Cruz Palace
  • Barrio de las Letras
  • Plaza Santa Ana
  • Teatro Español
  • Spanish writers’ houses: Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Góngora
  • Life and death of Federico García Lorca
  • The Congress of Deputies
  • The Golden Triangle of Art: the Prado Museum, the Thyssen Museum, the Reina Sofía Museum
  • Paseo del Prado
  • The Neptune Fountain
  • The Cibeles Fountain and Palace
  • Gran Vía
  • The Metrópolis Building
  • Retiro Park

Our recommendation: If you have a passion for literature or for the history of the Bourbon dynasty, this is a must for you in Madrid!

The Spanish Inquisition: one of the most mysterious and bloody institutions of European history to date, its brutal reign weighed heavy over Spain like a curse. In the name of religious orthodoxy, the ruthless founders of the Inquisition oversaw the torture, repression and banishment of hundreds of innocent and terrified people. What began as an attempt to protect the sanctity of the Catholic church and the morality of the populace swiftly became an oppressive regime and would eventually leave a dark shadow on the landscape of Spain’s history.

During this three hour tour we explore the mysteries and legacies of the Spanish Inquisition, visiting key areas of the city which were the setting for this bloody tribunal. Your guide will expose the truth about the four long centuries where the Institution loomed over the city. Discover the real motives behind the foundation of the Spanish Inquisition and the people who ran it, the gruesome and cruel torture methods they employed, and the people who they made their victims.

The climate of paranoia and persecution the Spanish Inquisition created was so overwhelming that its reputation outgrew its reality and it became what we know of it today: much-referenced but little understood.

This tour covers:
  • Origins of the Inquisition
  • The Inquisition´s jail
  • The possessed of St. Placido
  • Acts of faith in Plaza Mayor
  • Witch covens
  • Persecution and torture
  • Expulsion of the Jews
  • The Black Legend
  • Religious persecution
  • Monastery of the Encarnación

Our recommendation: There are no age limitations, although parents with children under 13 years old should be aware of the adult nature of this tour.
